Week #3, Music

Something about music has seemed to always affect our moods and emotions. Music can make us feel happy, sad, calm, or inspired. It can reduce anxiety, sadness and pain. It can make us dance and sing, Music can bring back old memories and find a special place in our hearts.
But the question is, How? What about music makes us feel these emotions? How can something we just listen too change us so easily? how does music make us so happy?

There are many reasons why music affects our emotions, and a lot of it has to do with our brains. We often feel emotions come from our heart, but a huge part of our emotional stimulus comes from from the brain. Research indicates that music stimulates emotions through specific brain circuits.

When you are listening to music that makes you feel happy, and joyful it increase the amount of  dopamine in your brain, which is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brains pleasure centre, in other words, it is a chemical that makes us feel happy. The same thing happens when listening to other types of music.

The rhythm and tone of a song that we listen to can actually affect our heartbeat as well and has a strong effect on the brain. Our hearts begin to synch with the beat, and rhythm of a song. For example, sad songs often have a slower beat and rhythm, and a heartbeat with a slow and strong diastolic pressure tells our brain that something sad or depressing is occurring, very fast beating indicates excitement, while a dreamy rhythm with occasional beats can indicate love and joy.

Music can also affect our emotions because of memory. Listening to old music we had listened to in the past can remind us of how that song made us feel and bring back deep, meaningful memories from our past. For example, listening to a song that you have loved since you were little, that you used to sing with your father can bring back happy memories, that can even make you cry,

So, I decided to look back at some songs that make me feel different emotions and see what about them make me feel this way.

Starting with some songs that what make me feel happy. The songs that make me feel happy include, three little birds (Bob Marley) and the scientist (coldplay), and both these songs bring back happy memories. When I was little, my family would often play Bob Marley in the living room. The scientist is one of my favourites, and it was the first Coldplay song I have ever heard, I still remember singing with my dad when I was little.
And the songs that make me fell sad include, hurt(cover by Jhonny Cash) and appointments (julien baker)  as these songs are slower and have slow, sad rhythms, as well as deeper lyrics. And lastly, the songs that inspire me include, fix you (coldplay), everglow (coldplay) and against the grain (city and colour) as these songs have powerful and relatable lyrics that inspire me in some way.
